India’s 28-year wait for World Cup glory is over.
The 2011 pre-tournament favourites achieved a deserved triumph yesterday by beating Sri Lanka in six wickets in the first all-Asian final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
Chasing a challenging 275 for victory, India achieved their target with ten balls left, to pick up their first title since Kapil Dev’s side upset mighty West Indies in 1983.
The co-hosts were powered by a superb 97 from Gautam Gambhir and a responsible unbeaten 91 from captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni who clinched victory with a six over long on.
India’s victory finally secured legendary batsman Sachin Tendulkar his first World Cup in his sixth campaign.
