Alexandra School principal Jeff Broomes remains opposed to the return of drums during Inter-School Sports.
“I am totally opposed to what Mac Fingall is saying, and I make no apologies about it,” he said.
Broomes was responding to a plea last month by former national athlete and entertainer Mac Fingall to “bring back the drums” and other instruments to the Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships.
Drums were banned by the Barbados Association of Principals of Public Secondary Schools in 2008 following reports of bad behaviour on the streets and in The City after Inter-School Sports.
Broomes was speaking to the MIDWEEK NATION yesterday at the St Peter school during a prefect training seminar. Asked if he believed the ban would be lifted, Broomes said: “I got a lot of respect for Mac Fingall and I love him, but I disagree with him.”
Broomes indicated that “since we banned the drums there have been more records broken . . . we had 27 records this year, which is unheard of”.
“I was the president when they banned the drums and I have good reason for banning the drums. I saw the number of people’s vehicles that got damaged, I saw the people that got hurt and I saw the premises that were destroyed. I myself got hit in a crowd because I went in to get out Alexandra children,” he said.
