Panel picked to judge teachers

Royal Fidelity’s managing director Charles Chambers will chair a seven-member blue ribbon panel of judges for the Royal Fidelity National Distinguished Teachers Awards.
The others are Grace Pilgrim, Keith Miller, Mac Fingall, Joyce Chase, Matthew Farley and Joyce Gittens, who were named last Thursday at the Barbados Cruising Club to adjudicate the awards which is a community initiative in association with the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT).
The purpose of the annual programme, announced late last year, is to recognise and reward ten exceptional teachers who have been nominated by the public, their peers, parents and students. Along with the title, the winning teachers will each receive $2000.
The judges will review nominations together and select ten winners who must be employed full time classroom teachers in the Barbados education system and have at least five years’ teaching experience as of January 1, 2011. Nominations will open next Tuesday, April 12.
Chambers said a great deal of thought had gone into the selection of the panel, noting that his company wanted members who represented a good cross section of the community and had some position or standing regarding education and its delivery in Barbados.
“We are pleased with our panel in all respects and feel confident they will make the tough decision necessary to find the ten winners in what we expect to be a very competitive field,” Chambers said.
