CASTRIES, St. Lucia – The George Charles Airport on the outskirts of the capital remained closed today after a small aircraft crash while attempting to land.
The St. Lucia Air and Sea Port Authority (SLASPA) said the pilot, Silvanus Ernest, who was the sole occupant of the twin engine Cessna A421 aircraft, escaped unhurt.
The plane crashed into a nearby fence after its landing gear became stuck forcing the pilot to circle the runway for an extended period.
Officials were unable to say how soon the airport would re-open, indicating that the aircraft would first have to be removed and the airport secured as a section of the perimeter fence was dismantled.
The closure has resulted in the cancellation of several flights into and out of the island. (CMC)
