HEALTH OFFICIALS yesterday inspected Combermere School following discovery of rodent infestation at the Waterford, St Michael institution last week.
The school was closed Friday for industrial cleaning after there were several reports of rat sightings particularly in the hall and staff quarters.
Last Thursday, scores of students spent most of the day outside their classrooms after the rat alarm was sounded.
The rodents sent screaming teachers scampering onto desks. Some students reported that when the health inspector turned up, he too, was put to flight by an unusually large rat.
They believed the rat problem could have started at the rear of the school where garbage is usually kept for collection. Some of the rats eventually overran a little-used room near the staff room in which several litters were found.
A source close to the school also felt that rats might have recently penetrated the school from the densely populated Waterford neighbourhood.
Principal Vere Parris, in a terse comment, told the SUNDAY?SUN: “Any issue we have is under control.”The school is scheduled to reopen tomorrow.
