WITH the Common Entrance Examination less than three weeks away, principal of St Cyprian’s Boys’ School, Dave Layne, is sparing no effort to make sure his students achieve some of the best results this year.
As Layne surveyed 25 students doing a “mock exam”, he told the MIDWEEK NATION that the students had been doing practice exams for the last five weeks, but not as fully.
“This is the first time we have actually placed them in an exam setting, isolating them from everyone else and taking them through the full ropes,” he stated.
Layne said he was expecting “quite a few” full marks, especially in the mathematics paper, and was hoping the school’s overall results would be in the top five schools this year.
He revealed that last year the school placed eighth overall in mathematics and tenth in English.
“This year we have some very strong students, so I’m hoping that the school will place in the top five in both categories overall and to have the top boy and a few full marks,” he said.
Layne said he felt all his students were “ready now” and he was confident that the entire class would score above an average of 70 per cent.
“Most of the students are aiming for the traditional secondary schools of Queen’s College, Harrison College, Combermere and St Michael, so I expect they will do quite well. They are ready to go.”
The principal said although he hadn’t notified parents as yet he was hoping to have another mock exam, this time jointly with Trinity Academy, so that students could also experience different environments.
“Today they did the full exam, maths, English and the essay and it will be corrected tomorrow and discussed on Thursday, so they will have a very good idea of what areas they have to strengthen as well, but we also want them to experience a different setting so they become more comfortable,” he said.
