Tara Burrowes dug deep in her reserve tank and emerged with a hard-fought victory against Rose Ann Butcher to help Barbados Light & Power close out a 3-0 victory over the Barbados Defence Force in the Roleric Miller Division Two Table Tennis Club Championship on Tuesday night.
Butcher, making a comeback after a brief break from competition, pressed Burrowes all the way at the Table Tennis Centre, Nursery Drive, but the latter showed excellent poise in fashioning a 3-2 win 11-7, 7-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-3.
Burrowes has been working hard with Egyptian coach Mohamed Gharib and the extra work paid off.
It was nevertheless an encouraging return for Butcher, with little to separate the players before Burrowes pulled away in the final game.
Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic provided the early inspiration for BL&P as he survived a topsy turvy contest before beating Tryvonne Powlett 11-13, 11-9, 11-7, 9-11, 11-6.
Ricardo John had little drama against Shamari Bullen. He did suffer a first-game loss at nine, but rebounded well to win the next three games 11-7, 11-3, 11-3.
Victories from Wilmont Goddard and David Bowen helped Legends earn a comfortable 3-0 triumph over the Barbados Union of Teachers.
In the only other match played, Fast Loopers “A” beat Reddy Kilowatt 3-1 on the strength of two impressive victories by Xavier Duncan.
Duncan overcame Wayne Padmore 11-7, 11-7, 11-7 and Shelly-Ann Niles 11-5, 10-12, 11-5, 11-4. Nicole Alleyne won the other match for the Loopers, beating Niles 11-9, 11-3, 11-4. (PH)
