Bluebirds Cultural Club nurtured many St Philip teenagers in the 1960s and ’70s when youth groups were popular and young people in the neighbourhood sought them out for personal development and recreational value.
Men and women who were once members of the now defunct Six Roads, St Philip club relived those memories at a grand reunion held at a Welches, Christ Church beach house on a recent weekend. There was a lot of jesting in reflection as speaker after speaker, led by MC Keith Franklyn, related experiences in an organisation where valuable life lessons were learnt by young people who built strong community bonds and lifelong friendships in the process.
Many former Bluebirds members today hold prominent positions in Government and in corporate Barbados and Franklyn encouraged everyone to join him as he outlined plans for the group to band together again to give back and work for charity in the spirit of the former club in which they all grew up.
“If we fail to give back, we are failing ourselves and we are failing the very heritage that we came through,” Franklyn told the exhuberant group.
The rejuvenation begins with a concert at the Princess Margaret School on May 15.
