Crop Over 2011 gets under way with the first of the LIME/HOTT 95.3 FM Youth Rally And Cavalcade at Briar Hall Playing Field, Christ Church, on Saturday.
In response to requests for greater opportunities for youth to display their talents at Crop Over, the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) has introduced the youth rallies – by the youth for the youth.
Presented as part of the popular Cavalcades, there will be  two of these events: the first on Saturday at Briar Hall and the second on Saturday, May 21, at Gall Hill Playing Field in St John. Both youth rallies begin at 2 p.m. and end at 8 p.m.
The primary objective of the youth rallies is to sensitize a youthful audience about Crop Over, while showcasing the talents of their peers as performers and entrepreneurs.
The rallies will include musical performances, dance competitions, fashion displays, Kadooment costume presentations and cheer leading displays.
The rallies will also present opportunities in the Young Entrepreneurs’ Corner for young businesspersons to engage in commerce to showcase their various products and services.
Four Cavalcades are on the Crop Over 2011 calendar. These events signal the start of one of the most eagerly anticipated features of the festival, which is the appearance onstage of performers to offer the fresh music of the season, new talent and some nostalgic performances. The Cavalcades are the ignition to the music in the Sweetest Summer Festival.
The venues for the Cavalcades, which run from 8 p.m. to midnight, are Briar Hall Playing Field, Christ Church, on Saturday; Gall Hill Playing Field, St John, on May 21; Emerald City Car Park, St Philip, on May 28; and the National Stadium on June 4. (YB/PR)
