Clarke wins another road race

Simon Clarke has done it again.
Not that his winning road races comes as any surprise.
Cycling’s reigning two-time road race champ added another victory to his season, taking Sunday’s 50-lap criterium on the Fontabelle circuit for his fifth win in six starts this year.
It was the third victory in as many races for Clarke, whose only loss this season came against Russell Elcock on the same course almost two months ago.
But there would be no such let-down this time around, with the national champ comfortably holding off former Team Aspire teammate Jamol Eastmond and Ross Callender of G4S Swift at the line in his customary sprint for the finish.
The race was probably decided about 30 minutes earlier though, as everyone was bunched together for the final 14 laps, leaving Clarke as the favourite since he was the best sprinter in the pack.
It was a deviation from the original strategy used earlier in the event that saw Callender make a break from the peloton as early as the third lap.
AMOND Fugen’s Elcock extended his near two-year unbeaten streak in the Juniors when he won his division over Brandon Wilkie of G4S and club-mate Zavier Walcott-Alleyne.
In the Juvenile category, Kristin Vanderpool (AMOND Fugen) got the better of his brother Gregory and G4S Swift’s Liam Lovell, while Ajani Miller (AMOND Fugen) was the lone finisher in the Tiny Mite division.
There were also wins for Sedwin Jones (AMOND Fugen), John Proverbs (Velo Caribe) and Albert Hinds (Team Aspire) in the Masters, Over-50 and Category 4 divisions, respectively.
