LLOYD?ALLEYNE, one of the most successful black businessmen in the country and the architect of the growth and expansion of Shamrock Trading, is dead.
Alleyne, who in the 1970s and 1980s owned eight supermarket and minimart outlets, passed away at the age of 80 at his Ruby Park, St Philip home on Tuesday about 6:30 a.m.
A father of 14, many of whom worked with him in the business, Alleyne also owned a warehouse in Fontabelle and in later years acquired approximately 18 000 square feet of warehouse space at Springfield, Barbarees Hill, St Michael.
Daughter Shurla Alleyne-Dear said: “He brought us all up in the business as long as we were tall enough to see over the counter. We had to play our part, go and pack shelves and earn our wages like.
“Having being brought up that way, it inculcated in us good work ethics.”
Son George said his father was a selfless and very generous man while daughter Marlese Taylor said he was a strict disciplinarian and a stickler for punctuality.
The service and burial for Alleyne is slated for Wednesday at the Church of Holy Trinity.
