A mum’s advice

A mum’s sage advice has helped to shape and steer the lives of children. EASY Magazine asked some of our Facebook readers to share their  best bits of advice from their mothers.
Janine McAdams (not her real name) always regrets the time she didn’t heed her mother’s advice. When her mother met Janine’s fiancé, she pulled her daughter aside afterwards and told her plainly: “Don’t marry that man, he will not make you happy.”
Janine was perplexed and angry because she felt her mother was trying to bring gloom and doom into her relationship. So she shrugged off the comments, and eight months later married Tony, who she described as the man of her dreams.
That dream quickly turned nightmarish for Janine, who learnt a week after their marriage that Tony basically had another life that he was keeping under wraps.
That life included a woman who was eight months pregnant, who proceeded to bombard her with harassing phone calls, though Tony swore it was a lie and the woman was crazy. Not only was the woman not crazy but Janine quickly found out that Tony had about two other baby mummas stashed away that came out the woodwork after the wedding.
Hurt and devastated, she left him after two months and filed for divorce. She returned home to her mother who was there willing to help her pick up the pieces and put her life and broken heart back together. Since that time, Janine never took her mother’s advice lightly again.
Nesha Cole: My mum said to always be myself and not someone else!!!
Sherrie Bumbray: My mum told me that being happy is a choice. Therefore, you must choose to be happy.
Denise Best-Walrond: Mum always said “a liar must have a good memory” as she looks you dead in the eye to see whether you are lying or not. It taught me to speak the truth at all times, especially to her.
Cicely M. White: My mum always warned my siblings and me to stay close to those who would lift us up and far away from those who would seek to pull us down. I’ve passed that same advice on to my daughters.
Carol-Ann Wiggins: Well I’m still growing but my mother would say boyfriends/sex can wait so keep your legs closed and put your education first. Then you can pay for and support anything after you got a big job.
Loraine Warner: My mum always told my sisters and I not to eat from anybody’s house. Whatever she gave us make do like if it was a three course meal. I remember getting some good lashes from eating at a neighbour that cooked white rice and corn beef. My mum wash me in licks’ cause I never used to eat white rice at home. That was a lesson well learnt so yes, it was good advice.
Rosanne Brathwaite: Well this is four  generations of advice that was passed down from my great grandmother. Never get involved with a man who smokes, drinks or gambles. For some reason that piece of advice has always stuck with me.
Raquel Gilkes: My grandma always told me ‘Like who like you, not who you like’!!
