JUNIOR CYCLING’s stock is continuing to soar.
Talented young rider Javed Mounter set a new junior track record in the match sprint as the highlight of a number of spectacular rides from young cyclists during last week’s track league at the national Stadium’s Randolph Field Velodrome.
It was the second time Mounter replaced the junior mark in the match sprint, bettering his old record of 11.7 seconds with an 11.3 clocking at the same venue.
This after 14-year-old juvenile rider Liam Lovell stunned an open field to reach the final four of the 200 metres.
He qualified with a fourth-best time of 12.4 seconds to set up a semi-final showdown against the highly-rated Mounter. But Mounter eventually downed Lovell before going on to win the finals against Jamol Eastmond, who had dominated the senior category one week prior.
Lovell also went on to capture the 1 500 and 2 000 metre events, beating Edwin Sutherland and Tunnico Weekes in both rides to cap his night’s surreal performance.
Gifted junior Brandon Wilkie stepped up a division later that evening to stun his senior counterparts by taking the unknown event, relegating the likes of Darren Matthews and Shane Weekes to second and third, respectively.
In the day’s final race, Ross Callender lapped all but five riders in an open field to capture the gruelling 30-lap 1 500 metres.
And Callender just missed out on circling all of the pack after finishing just 100 metres behind Matthews, Eastmond, Wilkie, Colin Sealy Jr and Colombian national Jaime Ramirez.
The track league season continues with its third event tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the same venue. (JM)
