And with the top locally-bred filly Slip Stream staying indoors, stablemate Kendal Moon looks set to come out on top in the feature Barbados Fillies Guineas (Gr.1-Bar) at the Garrison Savannah today.
Kendal Moon will be out to make amends for her disappointing showing in the first jewel of this year’s Triple Crown – the Barbados Guineas.
The Sir Charles Williams-owned and Andrew Nunes-trained filly will meet nine others in what should be an extremely competitive 1 570-metre race for West Indian-bred three-year-old fillies, featuring easily one of the best fields assembled for a fillies Guineas in recent times.
With eight of the ten entered already winners, Kendal Moon will not have things her own way as no fewer than three have claims to the top prize.
She just failed to peg back the top two in her last effort – the Ginger Punch Trophy Handicap for horses rated 58-80 going under by less than a length.
Trainer Nunes will also be sending out the Jane’s Girl-owned Cinnamon Jane.
She has proven herself against the lesser quality three-year-olds having recently won the Roses In May Trophy Condition Race for non-winners of two or more races over 1 570 metres, but it would be surprising if she gets the job done.
The Lord Michael Taylor-owned Reprise, since her maiden victory in the III Diamonds International Mont Blanc Doue Condition Race Division (B) over 1 570 metres, has started three times but has not built on that winning effort.
While she has not been disgraced, there is scant margin for error as the Midsummer Classic and Derby looms.
The Fiona Kinch-owned Fernandina has raised the alarm after her wide margin of victory in the Registered Grooms Division (B) event over 1 570 metres.
Albeit that that event offered an ordinary maiden field, this 70-rated challenger will have some ground to find to be on par with the favourite at best.
Chandler-owned Sweet Bottom Suzy is one of three maidens entered. She has fared better than the entire field against the top three-year-olds, but has found the winner’s enclosure elusive, most recently suffering at the hands of jockeys’ arrangements.
Should her owner rectify this problem and book one of the few live riders, her maiden tag should be a thing of the past.
