Eight coveted spots on the Barbados team to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Age Group Championships in the British Virgin Islands are up for grabs this weekend.
The Amateur Athletic Association will be staging the Multi-Event Trials at the National Stadium from 10 a.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday.
Elroy Agard and Angela Jackson have been appointed coaches to lead the two-time defending champions at the regional meet in Tortola from July 1 to 2.
Agard told NATIONSPORT he wanted to see a high level of competition. At the first trial, very few athletes competed.
“I am looking for fierce competition. The squad that has been put together is about 16 athletes and they have been training for the past two weeks, doing the finishing touches.
“I want them to compete hard against each other and try to get close to the standards,” Agard said.
He also wants the schools and clubs to send forward eligible athletes to make it even more competitive.
At the first trials, Cristanna McConney and Ryan Vickers won the Under-13 division, while Allana Ince and Ramarco Thompson topped the Under-15 division.
Athletes have to show their skills in the jumps, sprints, hurdles and throws and then compete as mixed relay teams.
Agard said the eight athletes and reserves would be training for a further two weeks ahead of travel at the end of the month. (SAT)
