MOST tent managers are against fewer calypso tents at Crop Over, saying the tents could be an avenue for young musicians and singers, thus guaranteeing the festival’s future.
“I think they have a lot of talented young people who need opportunity, and if they don’t have a number of tents, I would not be able to get the young talent I have exposed,” said Jerry Roberts, manager of the Stray Cats.
He said that every year the older calypsonians moved from tent to tent, looking for greener pastures, and this gave the young talent an opportunity to fill their places.
“There are a lot of Rihannas out there looking for a break and the young people should be encouraged. My only problem is to get the young people to do social commentary.”
Eleanor Rice, manager of the Cave Shepherd All Stars, also spoke to the issue. (JS)
