WITH PRESSURE MOUNTING on the Government to implement a “freeze” on public sector wages, Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler says he is not about to use the “F”-word at this time.
He however expects the matter will form part of the upcoming negotiations set between the unions and the Ministry of the Civil Service, which falls under the auspices of the Prime Minister’s Office.
“I can’t say to you that there is going to be a wage freeze. I would be presumptuous to say that, but what I can tell you is that the circumstances would suggest that both sides would have to seriously consider
a wage restraint strategy that gets Barbados back where it needs to be,” Sinckler told the SUNDAY SUN.
Pressed to give his own position on the matter, the minister said the present situation demanded that “all options be put on the table”, emphasizing that “there should be wage restraint”. (GE/KJ)
