A gaping hole has been left in the house of 80-year-old Bernice Reece after demolition work started on it last Wednesday, leaving her exposed to the elements.
Reece’s daughter Margaret Quinn said the house fell into disrepair after her mother was denied permission to have it repaired following her father’s death in 1992.
Quinn added that her mother’s brother Darnley Reece was made trustee of the land after their father’s death, and despite efforts by the Rural Development Commission (RDC) over the past 20 years to repair the house, he denied them permission.
Instead, Reece was presented with a land valuation from the Department of Land Tax which states that the 6 028 square feet is valued at $211 000 and she is expected to come up with that sum to purchase the land at Bovell Road, Queen’s Street, St Peter, if she wants to initiate any construction.
