With no official start-up date for Jamaica just yet, the Barbadian-based, low-cost carrier REDjet said yesterdayit was looking south to Trinidad for much needed Crop Over business.
The airline, which only received final clearance for Port-of-Spain this week, is also seeking to capitalize on the August 5 Rihanna Loud Concert.
“We know that many consumers are interested in coming to Barbados for Crop Over . . . so in time for the festival and the Rihanna Loud Concert, which is a key event for Barbadians and Caribbean people, we will fly [the Trinidad route] on July 28, July 29, July 31, August 2, 3, 5 and 7,” said company spokeswoman Nyssa Pierre.
REDjet also has plans to introduce four flights a week between Barbados and Trinidad, starting August 8.
Pierre said the longer-term goal of the fledgling carrier, which formally entered the market back in May with novel US$9.99 fares, is to operate a daily service on the Trinidad route.
Also addressing yesterday’s Press briefing at the Grantley Adams International Airport, chief executive officer Ian Burns said he remained upbeat about plans to fly into Jamaica by October even though he had not yet seen any official communication regarding an all-clear for Kingston.
As for Guyana, Burns said he was pleased with the operations there to date. He reported a 98.5 per cent on-time performance in its first two months, adding that REDjet was already making an impact economically and socially with people who had never travelled before.
