Junior Kadooment bands could be masquerading in the streets in a longer parade in the future.
It is a suggestion made by a former leader of the masquerade bands, which chief executive officer of the National Cultural Foundation (NCF) Dr Donna Hunte-Cox said yesterday “is definitely something to be considered”.
Speaking to the DAILY NATION at the National Stadium Saturday, Hunte-Cox agreed with the suggestion of a parade ending in Queen’s Park or nearby Weymouth pasture which would give the young revellers a better opportunity to show off their costumes along the road for more Barbadians to see.
However, she said parents’ views would have to be canvassed since she was not sure how they would respond to the idea.
The NCF boss added it was “a recommendation that should be considered for the future” though it would require “a lot of co-ordination and security”.
Six schools were among the 14 bands participating in Saturday’s Junior Kadooment, to the delight of Hunte-Cox:
“We are pleased with the response from the schools.”
She said the NCF would like to see even more schools participating “but a lot of it stems from the involvement of the principals and teachers who have the passion, because it is very time-consuming”.
“We usually facilitate by giving tutors and facilitators to help the process and a lot of that is what fuels Junior Kadooment,” Hunte-Cox said, adding she had seen results of the NCF input.
She noted that input had really served its purpose and was building a good foundation for masquerade at the adult level.

Young?Spirits?Community Band Echoes From De Past won the Best Band prize in the National Cultural Foundation’s (NCF) Junior Kadooment 2011 over the weekend.
Copping the title of Junior King was Skies Aglow – Jared Moore of We Bright And Shining by Gwyneth Squires.
The title of Junior Queen went to Queen of Hearts – Sankara Price of Every Occasion, A Celebration, by Winsome Thomas.
Best School Band was St Stephen’s Every Occasion, A Celebration, while Best Couple overall was Kids On The Move – Hoopla Di Hoopla Da – by Jodi Haloute and Gabrielle Nadur.
Most Colourful Band was Gwyneth Squires’ We Bright & Shining. Deacon’s Primary took the BMA Brands Of Barbados Award and the Historical Category.
