CASTRIES, St Lucia – The St Lucia government Monday expressed its condolences at the death of the former director of culture, Jacques Egyptien Compton, saying that his work “has established him not only as a giant but also an authority on the history and culture of people of African descent”.
Compton, 83, died after a brief illness and will be buried on Tuesday.
“Jacques has always been passionate about Caribbean and African history. His many writings, commentaries and lectures have provided thorough accounts of our historic past and heritage,” the Stephenson King administration said in a statement.
It said that Compton had “continuously sought to highlight the value and pride in the history and achievements of our people” and that “Government expresses profound condolences and solidarity with the entire cultural community, friends and family members of this St Lucian cultural giant”.
Compton, who was also a broadcaster, served as Director of Culture between 1985 and 1997 and also excelled as a dancer, singer and television actor in Europe.
