DEAR CHRISTINE – Mental block on love life

Dear Christine,
I’ve been dating this guy who came out of a five-year relationship last May, since mid-June.
When we first got intimate at his home, he found it difficult to get an erection.
We made another attempt, but again it did not work. He’s been telling me that it could be a mental block. Since we started being intimate at my place, he’s been feeling more comfortable, but I sometimes think that he is thinking about his ex-girlfriend.
He wants me in his life, but he is a bit cautious about giving his all. I believe it is because he wants to be sure I am with him.
Can you tell me if after being in a relationship for five years, it would be easy to go into another relationship? Is he really still thinking about his ex? Should I continue to date him or slow down? I am a little unsure of what to do.

Dear Sandra,
You may not like my response, but I honestly believe that both of you have jumped into a sexual relationship too soon. If he broke away from his ex-girlfriend in May, why was he jumping into bed with you so soon after? Likewise, you’ve only met this man in mid-June, and already you’re intimate with him. What about taking time to help him heal from the previous relationship? What about becoming his friend, before being his lover?
There is nothing wrong with dating him, but surely, sex does not have to be part of the picture at this time.
I cannot for sure tell you if he is thinking about his ex, but I do not believe he is healed from that relationship. I would advise you both to take things slowly and stop rushing to get into bed with each other. There should be more to a relationship than sexual gratification.
