Jamaican tourism pioneer dies

KINGSTON, Jamaica – The former tourism executive, politician and pioneer broadcaster and journalist, Anthony Abrahams, died today, aged 71.
Abrahams, who in 1970 became the youngest ever director of tourism and later served as Minister of Tourism and Information ten years later, died after an undisclosed illness.
He was elected to serve as Member of Parliament for the Eastern Portland riding in 1980 for the People’s National Party (PNP) and was also a senator from 1977 to 1978.
The PNP hailed him for his contribution to Jamaican tourism and media.
Abrahams, who in 1965 became the first black television reporter for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in London, began Jamaica’s first current affairs breakfast radio programme, the Breakfast Club in 1992,
In 1970, he was youngest person ever to be appointed as Director of Tourism, one month short of his 30th birthday. (CMC)
