Rain has put today’s Sagicor General Super Cup cricket semi-finals in doubt.
And unless there is a change in the weather and there is adequate sunshine allowing for the drying of outfields, it appears the two teams which topped their respective zones, may unfortunately crash out without bowling a ball.
Because of their super net run rate, BNB St Catherine and TeleBarbados Carlton are likely to advance to the September 4 final should the semi-finals be rained out and end in a no-decision.
St Catherine, who are due to meet ESA Field Pickwick in one semi-final at Dayrell’s Road, have a better super net run rate than their opponents.
Carlton also have a better net run rate than fellow unbeaten team ICBL Empire, who they are slated to oppose at the Yorkshire Sports Club ground, Friendship, Hothersal Turning.
It rained heavily yesterday causing the abandonment of some matches of the opening day of the seventh series of the LIME Division One Championship, and other competitions across the island.
With more rain forecast for today, the prospect of play appears very remote but a late start and a reduction in the overs could also be possible once conditions become suitable for cricket.
Rule 20 (e) of the 2011 Sagicor General Super Limited Overs Competition states that “in the event that any match in the semi-finals ends in a tie or a no decision, the team which has the better net run rate in the preliminary rounds shall advance to the final”.
There is no provision for an extra day in the case of rain but the rules however, provide for a replay of the final if it is not determined on the field of play in the first instance.
Should play be possible and the outfield is not wet, making gripping of the ball difficult, spin could be a key factor in both matches. But the seamers could also relish the overcast conditions.
Today’s matches are scheculed to start at 9:30 a.m.
