DEAR CHRISTINE – Nowhere to turn, no food to eat

Dear Christine,
I am writing this letter with a heavy heart. I am asking anyone in authority who can assist, to help me with my situation.
From 1980, I was appealing to the National Housing Corporation (NHC) to assist me with a house. At that time my children and I were much younger. I even went to Hamilton Lashley for help. He took me to the NHC himself and spoke to a gentleman but nothing has happened.
I stopped going there in 1991, from sheer frustration. I have spent my entire working life renting. I am now 53 years of age, medically unfit with osteoarthritis in my knees, a diabetic, and taking care of a mentally challenged daughter.
Over the years I had to take out loans from the bank and the credit union to pay for my daughter’s surgery and other medical bills. I am now in court trying to pay off those bills. My pension is $600, and the rent is $900. I get assistance from the Welfare Department for my daughter, that amounts to $252 per month, but the electricity and water bills are a challenge.
Some days we do not eat, and survive on a cup of tea. I know there are people out there in worst positions than I am but I have nowhere to go, no one turn to, and no food to eat. Thanks for your time and space.
– R.

Dear R,
It seems to me that with less rent to pay, you’ll be in a better position to take care of yourself, your bills and your daughter.
I will follow up with the National Housing Corporation (NHC) on your behalf, since your letter will not furnish officials there with enough personal information to look into your case.
You are already receiving assistance from the Welfare Department, so I won’t be contacting that department.
Each week I receive letters from individuals asking for assistance, and I must often tell people such as yourself, that help can only be given when the public responds to the respective needs.
I will see how bestI can help, and will be in contact with you soon.
–  CHRISTINE
