A CALL HAS GONE out for judicial officers to get tougher with crop and animal thieves.
Chief executive officer of the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), James Paul, reiterated his plea for judges and magistrates to appreciate the gravity of praedial larceny when handing down sentences.
Paul was speaking against the backdrop of the suspended sentence imposed recently on a thief who was caught in the act stealing livestock at the Farmers, St Thomas property of businessman Sir Charles Williams.
Sir Charles and his son Stephen were so upset and “broken-hearted” at the nine-month probation penalty, they spoke of getting out of farming because it did not pay to be losing. (YB)
