Solid start for Bajans

BARBADOS made a positive start in the ladies badminton competition when the opening battles of the CAREBACO 2011 served off at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex on Sunday night.
Following an opening ceremony and parade of teams with addresses from Mervyn Gordon, Secretary of CAREBACO, Steve Stoute, President of the Barbados Olympic Association and Seibert Straughn, Chairman of the National Sports Council, Barbados scored key victories over Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname.
Queen’s College scholarship winner, Mikeila Carrington defeated Reba Fleary of T&T, 21-11, 25-23, in the juniors. Carrington would later team up with Monyata Riveira to stop Fleary and Kristi Reno-Singh, 21-10, 21-12.
T&T saved some oxide in the boy’s juniors with Matthaus Wilfred beating Jevon Gaskin, 21-19, 21-14.
Shari Watson turned back Suriname’s Priscille Tjitrodipo, 21-14, 21-15, in the senior team action.  Suriname held the upper hand with Virgil Soeroredjo whipping Andre Padmore, 21-14, 21-11.  Soeroredipo then teamed up with Mitchell Wongsodikromo to stop Wood and Dakiel Thorpe, 21-18, 21-19.
