‘Beast’ tamed in the ring

Anderson Emmanuel and Cobia Breedy had contrasting fates when the Amateur Boxing Association of Barbados staged a 13-bout card at the Springer Memorial School on Saturday night.
Breedy stirred a crowd that included former Mr Universe Earl Maynard with his leopard outfit – tail and all plus the word “Beast” emblazoned in the back.
Unfortunately, he did not impress Stefan Goveia who picked up Guyana’s sole win of the night.
The action was closed out with the heavyweight battle between Emmanuel and Denzil Salazar of Guyana which Emmanuel won in unimpressive fashion.
Kimberley Gittens of the Barbados Defence Force Sports Programme (BDFSP) out-boxed the thick Simone Hoyte of Guyana to take their three-round contest in the 75kg class.
Hoyte employed a technique of cornering her opponent and using her weight to pummel away, but Gittens skifully avoided several traps and responded with some telling jabs and punches.
The light heavyweight battle proved to be the night’s main thriller, with Adrian Biscette of the BDFSP, displaying top condition, topping Sheldon Lawrence of Trinidad and Tobago with plenty of moves, punches and showmanship.
With the fans screaming for “Biscuit”, the powerhouse could have finished off his opponent but opted to leave him standing to entertain the crowd.
Of course the night’s events started the customary one hour late and that was extended even further as the ringside doctor was forced to give medical checks to the Guyanese boxers who had only reached the island earlier in the evening.
