Hurricane Katia is expected to pass well to the north of the Leeward Islands on Sunday generating life threatening swells and rip current conditions as it moves slowly across the region.
The Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said that Katia was located 530 miles east of the  northern Leeward Islands and was moving at 10 miles per hour.
It said the center of Hurricane Katia was located near latitude 19.3 north, longitude 55.1 west with no significant change in forward speed expected during the next few days.
“On the forecast track, Katia will pass well to the north of the Leeward Islands on Sunday,’ the NHC said, noting that maximum sustained winds are near 75 miles per hour with higher gusts.
Katia is already a Category One storm and NHC said “some slow strengthening is possible this weekend” and warned residents in the Leeward Islands to be careful of the swells generated by the hurricane “that are likely to cause life threatening surf and rip current conditions”. (CMC)
