KENRICK “Snappa” Husbands won the Driver Of The Day title at the recently contested Williams Digicel International Race meet organized by the Barbados Auto Racing League (BARL).
Husbands, at the wheel of the Hilti/Williams Equipment/Johnsen’s Toyota Starlet, is the new leader of the drivers from the north of the island.
He won all the races allotted to the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) Group 2 and took the checkered flag in two of the three races for BARL’s Group 2C.
Husbands confirmed he would be among the starters for the third leg in Guyana in November.
Speaking after the event Husbands said he felt happy about the outcome and thanked his technical crew and his sponsors for the able support he received from them throughout the season.
He said the competition in all the groups was fierce and the organizers were worthy of praise for pulling off a good event under the circumstances.
“The elements were not kind to us and everyone like the opportunity to qualify, but at this event it rained and that affected qualifying, but we still had a good event with great competition and well prepared cars,” Husbands said.
But it was not all plain sailing for Husbands as he had to overcome a gearbox problem after the first race for Group 2C. Later in the day, he and his mechanics had to deal with a driveshaft issue as the rigours of the day’s action took their toll.
“It is work in progress and it’s not over yet.
I have to maintain the form I am in and keep the machine in good knick in order to be around at the end of the championship.
“I want to hold on to Group 2C and also the Seaboard Marine Caribbean Motor Racing Championship (CMRC) Group 2 title,” Husbands said.
However, he said it was a good day for him and his preparation would now be focused on the third leg in Guyana and making sure that the car is “bullet-proof” and in top shape, as the demands of the South Dakota circuit are not easy and the competition will be very tough.
Drivers from Guyana, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and host country Barbados took part in the rain-affected race meet and are expected to line-up for the meet in Guyana.
