Bajans end with four golds

Barbados finished with 25 medals – four gold, seven silver, 14 bronze – when the curtain came down on the 2011 CAREBACO (Badminton) Championships on Saturday evening at the Wildey Gymnasium.
In the late matches, Shari Watson and Mariama Eastmond took the silver in the women’s doubles as they were defeated by Lohaynny Vincente and Luana Vincente of Brazil 21-16, 21-11.
Among the juniors, Cory Fanus and Sabeel Foster settled for silver in the Boys’ Under-17 doubles as they were beaten by the Puerto Rican pair of Ivan Morales and Cesar Rosa 21-15, 21-11.
In the Under-19 mixed doubles, Lisa King and D’Andre Thorpe went down 21-13, 21-8 to Puerto Ricans Bryan Valentin and Daneysha Santana to take bronze.
The four golds all came in the Under-13 division. Shae Martin won the boys’ singles and teamed up with Jordan Ollivierre to win the doubles. Amanda Haywood won the girls’ singles and combined with Martin for his third gold, and her second, in the mixed doubles.
Deroni Hurley was runner-up, and Nicholas Howard third in the Under-11 singles. (SAT/PR)
