St Andrew hard hit by rains

Despite heavy showers Friday night into yesterday morning, there were seemingly few incidents of flooding.
Among the most affected parishes was St Andrew. Shortly after the downpour, which drenched most of island, had subsided, the SUNDAY SUN was in time to see a Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) team clearing a gully in Belleplaine.
Old tree trunks, branches and other debris, too large to pass through the opening under the bridge, had lodged themselves there, causing the murky water to rise almost to the height of the road above.
At another St Andrew bridge, a wall of gabions, serving as a barrier against soil slippage by a gully in Bruce Vale, was no match for the torrents. It had collapsed. (MM)
