Victory for agents

ABOUT TWO DOZEN insurance agents who complained about conditions under which they were transferred when Sagicor Life Inc. acquired Life of Barbados (LOB) in 2003 won their case yesterday before the Severance Payment Tribunal.
“It has taken another four years to get to this stage, but we are very pleased at the outcome. It shows that our judicial system in Barbados still works,” spokesman for the group, Patrick Hill, told the MIDWEEK NATION.
The group, including several people with more than a decade of experience in the field, had challenged Sagicor’s position that the agents were independent contractors, rather than full-time employees, and not entitled to severance.
“In its decision handed down today, the tribunal determined that we are supposed to get severance,” Hill reported. (TY)
