Tourism danger signs

Vulgarity, materialism and intolerance can devastate Barbados’ tourism, Colin Jordan, president of the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association (BHTA), warned yesterday.
Jordan likened the impact of current negative trends to that of a Category 5 hurricane, as he delivered the Democratic Labour Party’s lunchtime lecture at the DLP headquarters, George Street, St Michael.
Speaking on the topic Will The Tourism Industry Go The Way Of The Sugar Industry?, Jordan said: “We are inviting people to our country to share our lifestyle with us, our culture . . . . We, however, are losing some of that culture. We are importing many negative mores from North Atlantic countries.
“As a result, we as a people are becoming increasingly vulgar, increasingly secular, increasingly materialistic and increasingly intolerant. This is a development that is negatively impacting our service.”
