PNP calls for elections

The People’s National Party (PNP), reacting to today’s announcement that Prime Minister Bruce Golding is stepping down, is calling for general elections to be held now. At a meeting of the PNP’s National Executive Council today in Montego Bay, the party’s highest decision making body passed a resolution calling for the entire Jamaica Labour Party Government to resign and for general elections be called now. The PNP, in an attempt to advance its position as the better choice for government, said in a statement issued by its general secretary, Peter Bunting that “this reflects negatively on the stability of the country given the circumstances that have compelled this decision”. The Opposition party stressed that “this decision by Mr Golding will not restore the country’s stability nor salvage the reputation of the JLP with respect to the poor quality of governance” and therefore the entire administration should “immediately resign and call the general elections”.
