Thefts up

POLICE?ARE?REPORTING a 55 per cent increase in theft from the person in 2011 over the previous year.
Speaking during a Press conference yesterday at the force’s Roebuck Street headquarters, public relations officer Inspector David Welch said that in 2010 there were 247 theft from the person cases, and thus far there have been 384 cases – 137 more.
Welch said Barbados continued to experience acts of snatching of jewellery and cellphones.
He added these cases were not isolated to any one area, and in most cases, the culprits were walking behind the victims and doing the snatching, or walking past them, then returning to take the property. He said sometimes the culprits rode bicycles. (AH)
