CASTRIES, St Lucia – St. Lucians are today remembering the seven people killed during the passage of Hurricane Tomas a year ago.
Prime Minister Stephenson King said his administration had taken the decision to observe October 31 as National Day of Remembrance in memory of the seven people when the 12th hurricane of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season hit the island.
“Flags will be flown at half mast, and (there will be ) memorial Ecumenical Church services in Bexon and Fond St Jacques the two mostly affected areas. There will be a gun salute at the Derek Walcott Square, observation of a national minute of silence and encouragement of special media programming in observance of the anniversary,” King said.
“Monday, October 31st, 2011 should be used for reflection and to summons our national spirit and determination to persevere despite major calamities and adversaries like Hurricane Tomas,” he added.
The hurricane, which is blamed for the deaths of 69 people in the Caribbean, is also said to have caused an estimated US$588 million in damages throughout the region. (CMC)
