TORONTO – Barbadian Patrick Husbands captured the supporting feature but narrowly missed out on the main stakes event, on a mixed day of fortunes at Woodbine racetrack on Saturday.
The veteran jockey uncorked a super ride aboard 2-1 bet Oregon Lady to snatch the CAN$105 200 (BDS?$208 368)?River Memories Stakes, going a mile on turf in race six on the nine-race card.
However, he just failed to take the $250 000 Princess Elizabeth Stakes in race eight over 1-1/16th miles, finishing second with 2-1 chance Dixie Strike, a length behind winner Rose and Shine.
In four other rides on the day’s programme, Husbands failed to make an impression and remains 22 wins behind in second, on 162 victories.
Mexican Luis Contreras won twice, including the capture of the Princess Elizabeth Stakes, to remain out front with 184 wins.
In his lone win on the day, Husbands was second from last down the backstretch as 6-1 bet Moonlit Beauty posted the early fractions with the field in pursuit. At the quarter mile covered in 24.50 seconds, Moonlit Beauty led a quartet of horses including the favourite Magic Broomstick with Husbands and Oregon Lady in a three-horse group five lengths back.
