Day to eat just Bajan

NEXT Friday, Barbadians are being encouraged to eat just locally produced food as the Graham Gooding Trust stages the second annual Eat Bajan Day.
The initiative was launched by the trust last year with the help of Super Centre supermarkets, which offered specials on local produce and special Bajan meals in all their delis on that day.
Organizers said Super Centre would again be the major partner this year, but they were hoping other businesses, hotels, restaurants and ordinary Barbadians – and even tourists – would support the effort.
“Aside from lowering our carbon footprint and our import bill, our local food is usually fresher, healthier and supports local jobs,” they added.
The late E.G.B. Gooding was a Barbadian botanist who carried out classic ecological studies of the island. He also made major contributions to local agriculture, including crop diversification, the introduction of onion growing and the development of instant yam flakes.
The Graham Gooding Trust, a registered charity set up in 1990 and supported by public donations, funds the Graham Gooding Biology Prize at the University of the West Indies in Gooding’s memory. (PR)
