Barbados should chart a new economic course as it seeks to escape the current economic climate, according to Reginald Farley, executive director of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Barbados (ICAB).
Speaking during a recent Press conference, he noted the need for “a strategic repositioning of our economic focus” and said ICAB members, as finance professionals in Government, the private sector and academia, were well placed to lend their expertise.
In light of this, Farley said that this year’s annual conference on Friday will focus on “building the new economy”.
“This year we have chosen to focus on building the new economy because it is very clear to us that not only do we have to emerge from our present economic difficulties but we also have to change course . . . and prepare to play an important and prosperous role in the new world order,” he said.
He said the conference would address “new and emerging areas of the economy in terms of sport, entertainment, music and film”.
“What we hope to develop out of this annual conference is a set of action points which can be [used] when members leave the room in order to take us closer to the new economy,” he said.
Farley noted that chartered accountants were among the most talented and qualified business and finance professionals in the world and played a critical role in the well-being of the economy.
The conference forms part of Accountants’ Week, which will be observed from November 6 to 12.
