Banker: Gov’t cant help all

A top banker says the Barbadian philosophy of “not leaving anybody behind” is under threat.
The country just cannot afford to provide expansive social services to everyone, no matter their financial circumstances, he said.
Derwin Howell, managing director and chief executive officer of Barbados National Bank (BNB), argued that with income levels increasing in Barbados over the years, the amount of money Government was spending on social services should have been coming down.
“The challenge for the Barbados Government is to match expenses with revenue, and the problem is that much of those expenses go towards supporting those who can’t support themselves. (GE)
