TEN BARBADIAN FISHERMEN detained in Tobago one week on illegal fishing and entry charges were freed yesterday, but a damaged boat and inclement weather could slow down their return home.
Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade Steve Blackett announced the release during a Press briefing yesterday, while new Ambassador to CARICOM, Robert “Bobby” Morris, told reporters he had set himself a one-year period within which to see at least substantial progress towards a new Barbados-Trinidad and Tobago fishing agreement.
Blackett told reporters he had been advised “that the fishermen have been released and are free to go”. He said the fishermen should be back in the island by Tuesday.
Knowledgeable sources told the SATURDAY SUN the fisherfolk could return sometime tomorrow, a journey delayed by rough sea conditions and damage to one vessel, which ran aground after the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard had intervened. (TY)
