Scores of loyal and prospective Digicel customers converged on Heroes Square on Wednesday as they took advantage of the Digicel offerings during the official launch of the telecommunication company’s 4G Broadband Network.
With an investment of over $20 million, Digicel said they wanted to ensure that their consumers would experience the 4G network and the latest range of 4G compatible handsets before Christmas.
“In the same manner that Digicel led the way nearly eight years ago by breaking the monopoly and making mobile telephone accessible and affordable to all, Digicel 4G will continue in this trend by offering convenient and affordable prepaid and postpaid plans to suit all persons,” stated Barry O’Brien, Digicel’s general manager.
During the outdoor promotion event which started with a motorcade from Warrens, patrons had the opportunity to shop for the latest handsets, top-up their mobile phones and get double credit and interact with Digicel representatives, as they listened to live entertainment from Mikey and Peter Ram. Some lucky customers also won various prizes.
O’Brien told the WEEKEND NATION that it was “through competition that Digicel brought to the market” that the telecommunication sector on the island “improved” over the years. He said while they brought competition in the mobile and broadband areas of telecommunications “the fixed-line service is perhaps the last piece of the jigsaw puzzle that really needs more competition.
He noted that for Digicel the Barbados market “will not grow in terms of customers” so for the company to improve business and grow they “need to offer” new products and services to customers.
“Competition is always good for all of us,” he said. “That is why we launched our 4G. That is why we have Netxar coming on and that is why we are looking at the fixed-line market,” he said. (MM)
