Christmas shoppers were treated to some Christmas cheer and plenty of giveaways when they stopped in on the Mall Internationale Christmas Choir Competition to hear students of primary and secondary schools sing their hearts out.
There was standing room only most of the time as large crowds assembled last Tuesday and Wednesday to hear the best of Barbados’ school and youth group choirs belt out soulful and stirring numbers that filled the air with cheer and the true spirit of Christmas.
The judging panel of Margaret Williams, Sharon Lynch, and Keith Squires will now have their hands full determining who will go forward from the preliminaries in an attempt to dethrone defending secondary school champions St. Leonard’s Boys’, and primary school champions Ignatius Byer.
Customers who look forward to the competition each year will this have the added treat this time around of hearing from community based youth group choirs, a new segment of the competition.
Last Wednesday, patrons squealed and applauded in delight as choirs from Combermere, The St. Michael School, Springer Memorial, and St. Leonard’s Boys’ School all delivered outstanding performances. The performance from Gordon Greenidge Primary and the youth group Triple Threat were also well received by the audience.
In earlier preliminaries on Tuesday a jam-packed hall at Mall Internationale heard high quality singing from competing choirs including Jones Private School and Hilltop Preparatory. Other primary schools commanding the stage included Vauxhall; West Terrace; St. Giles; St. Lawrence; Good Shepherd; and Blackman Gollop primary schools.
