Guides marching to own beat

For the first time in about 20 years, the Girl Guides Association of Barbados has a drum corps.
The ten-member group performed its first official function yesterday at the Guides’ 93rd anniversary annual thanksgiving service at St Mary’s Anglican Church in The City.
Chief Commissioner Ruth Parris said one of the challenges for the association was funding, as it needed money to set up a camp site for its 95th anniversary celebrations.
“We have to build an international camp in St Lucy. So we are in the process of fund-raising,” she explained.
Another challenge was with Guiders, who Parris said did not participate in as many association activities as she would like, though admitting many of them were committed to other organizations.
However, she said a bright spot was the continuing assistance of past members – heightened this year – which meant the movement would continue to grow strong.
