DEAR CHRISTINE: Time to give generously

Dear Readers,
It’s that time of the year when people in need seek assistance.
Over the past several months – and especially during the summer holidays – the demands have been increasing.
The demand this time of year is even greater, as those in need seek to enjoy a better Christmas during this season of giving.
Today, I am making a plea on behalf of those who are still in need. These include but are not limited to
• a grandmother whose daughter has died and left two children behind (their father recently lost his job);
• a family of nine who has difficulty getting a daily hot meal and is badly in need of furniture;
• a mother whose husband has lost his job and who cannot adequately take care of their two children;
• a family of three who desperately need a home and furniture;
• a family of six whose only means of support is the medical benefit cheque that the grandmother receives;
• and a family of four who lost their home of many years due to being unable to pay the rent – and the list goes on.
Suffice it to say, the need never stops.  Each week there are requests for help, but in some cases help cannot be given when the resources are few.
That there are lots of pockets of poverty in our country is an understatement.
As the Christmas holiday approaches, I urge you to give generously – food items are particularly needed as well as furniture and appliances in good condition, toys, and children’s clothing (especially suitable for church). These must be clean and in good condition.
Whatever contribution you can make, please do. Help to ensure that those less fortunate than you can also enjoy the Christmas season.
Items can be dropped off up to December 20 at THE NATION’s offices.
Thank you for reaching out.
– CHRISTINE
