Chargers’ women predictably picked up the volleyball double while ending a flawless season when the Goddard’s Enterprises Division One league climaxed on Wednesday night at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex.
Chargers defeated the last contender, The Rockets, 25-13, 25-22, 25-15, to finish with a maximum 60 points from 12 games, leaving the Rockets on 51.
Chargers’ Dania Hamilton ended the season the same way that she had started by smoking the opponents’ court.
With Anicia Wood and setter Leila Pieper out of the island, the Rockets would have struggled to stop Chargers in straight sets.
The nightmarish game by former Barbados player Krystanella Allain did not help Shari Matthews who battled almost single-handedly to try to take the game.
However, Hamilton, Sharon Bovell, Avara Browne, setter, Afyia Taylor, Thonya Joseph and libero Pilgrim were more than enough weapons for Chargers to halt the Rockets, take the crown and finalize their club’s historic year by winning all of the senior volleyball titles.
Disposed men’s champions RBC/RBTT Deacons saved some face by ending their unusual cup-less season with a victory over old enemy Progressive, 23-25, 26-24, 28-26, 25-21.
Young Akeem Payne and Fabian Cox had looked like they would push Progressive to a victory which would have allowed them to pip Cawmere for third spot.
However, setter Kyle Browne, along with a fiery Sheldon Roach held off Progressive in a game that saw emotions rising high.
Deacons ended second to Chargers.
