The editor-in-chief of the Dutch magazine which described Rihanna as a ‘n****r b***h’ has resigned.
Eva Hoeke had previously insisted the phrase was meant as a ‘joke’, but admits in her resignation statement that her ‘credibility has been hurt’ following the scandal.
She says: ‘The term ‘n****r b***h’ came from America and we solely used it to describe a style of dress. Because of the enormous pressure through social media I was tempted to promise amendment regarding the language in future issues of Jackie.
‘Apart from that I also offered an rectification. I have now come to the conclusion that rectification is not the right solution.’
Hoeke continues: ‘Through the course of events, me and the publisher have concluded that because my credibility is now affected, it is better for all parties if I quit my function as editor-in-chief effective immediately.
‘After putting my heart and soul into for Jackie for eight years, I realise that these errors – although not intended maliciously – are enough reason for leaving.’
Hoeke added that Rihanna, who had taken to her Twitter page to blast the magazine for their statement, will have the opportunity to comment on the story in the next issue of the magazine.
She concluded: ‘I should have counted to ten before taking unnuanced stands through social media channels.
‘Through this my credibility has been hurt and that neither fits the role of an editor-in-chief, nor Jackie Magazine.’
Following the outrage following the publication’s description of Rihanna, Hoeke had come forward to insist there was no racist motive behind the words.
Writing on the magazine’s Facebook page, she said: ‘While the author meant no harm – the title of the article was intended as a joke – it was a bad joke, to say the least.
‘And that slipped through my, the editor-in-chief’s, fingers. Stupid, painful and sucks for all concerned.’
The article in question also made reference to Rihanna’s ‘ghetto a**’ and ‘porn heels’.
Elsewhere it implied the singer is Jamaican, although she is actually from Barbados.
The furore comes just days after Rihanna took to her Twitter page to describe a racist incident in a Portugal hotel. (Daily Mail)
