In a blink, Christmas back again and since last week, the Christmas breezes ripping, de Vendor sleeping like a baby, that is to say, waking up and peeing every two hours.
Dis past week, we see de passing of some iconic figures in de world.
In Bubbadus, the greatest creative talent and possibly de best voice ever in Caribbean radio, passed away. Desmond Bourne was arguably the greatest media mogul that never was. He had a voice dat was like milk, smooth; it had timbre too.?When he spoke, it would boom! He was one of, if not de greatest morning men in radio, a legend at NBS610 radio in Trinidad, a creative genius who worked in no less a place than Madison Avenue.
Back ’bout hey, he create advertising campaigns that border pun genius. He is de reason we does eat roti and pizza! He had a radio show Jive Talking that used to mek people turn off de TV and listen. The scripting and the production would rank wid any pun any network including de BBC.
Witty, informative, entertaining, educational, it was mandatory to listen to Jive Talking pun a Wednesday night. He was de mastermind behind de 1976 BLP Great Combination campaign dat bring Tom Adams to power.
De night before election, he produce a show dat get past de eagle-eyed CBC censors. It turn out to be a one-hour long endorsement of de team he was supporting.
He had songs in de programme dedicated to every member of de BLP team but he disguise them like a man hiding gold! De one fuh Tom Adams went something like: “Here is my boy Tom, the man of the moment Tom, Tom Jones, that is.” And slick so, de man leggo a Tom Jones song wid de appropriate lyrics.
Then, there was de Antennae column in de Nation. Big men and women used to run out in dey petticoats and underwear when they hear de newspaper land pun de front porch at 4:30 a.m. and scan de column quick to see if they name get call, acid reflux in dey throat, stomach in knots and iffing dey name in de column, dem running fast to sit pun de toilet and groan at de licks that gine get share.
De Vendor get lashes and praise! But Des did as mischievous as talented and eccentric to de bizarre!
He used to phone me at 2 or 3 a.m. to tell me that I should know that one of de River Road stations off de air. Dat is why to dis day my phones does unplug when I sleeping, thanks Des!
One time, he borrow a document from de Vendor wid de understanding that he writing something complimentary. Sunday morning, he lather me in blows. Vex as hell, I demand back my document. He say ah would have to come fuh it ’cause he gine out, dat he gine leave it hanging in bag by de fence.
De only problem was dat de bag was hanging inside de fence and Des had ’bout 11 (see that 11 number again) dogs and every time I try to reach fuh de bag, de dogs nearly tek off muh hand.
But ah couldn’t help but notice that Des was peering through de side of de window curtains convulsing wid laughter!
I ain’t gine tell wunnah how I get de document.?Suffice it to say many a rock stone ’cause scatterration! Rest in peace, Desmond!
North Korean leader Kim Jong-il dead. People surprise, why? He last name was ill! I see people bawling pun TV, but it look fake, look like dem pretending to be crying but really celebrating! • I, Market Vendor, gone fuh now. You have a blessed and a wonderful day, yuh hear?
