The rains might have disrupted many of the scheduled matches of the BNB tournament, but the wiry Duncan Evanson brought plenty of heat to advance in the men’s open with a 6-0, 6-2 demolition of Liam Luke at the Ocean View Court yesterday.
Both players employed a serving game with the intention of neutralizing their opponent’s array of ground shots. However, Evanson’s greater height and reach saw him serving some bombs which Luke could not play or simply returned as lobs for easy points for Evanson.
Luke also scored a number of aces, as well as some scorchers, but he could not match Evanson who will meet Bradley Bryan in the next round. Â
Bryan, who lives in the United States, is the son of former top player Tyrone Mapp.
Bryan had destroyed eighth seed Brandon Lee 6-0, 6-0 when the two met. Meanwhile, the match between Ture Skinner and Andrew Thorington, which was supposed to be continued in the third set, 4-1, in Skinner’s favour ended in a default victory after Thorington indicated that he was suffering breathing problems overnight.
Ture will meet the winner of the match between Derek Scutt and Bernard Frost. The weather might seriously affect the playing of the preliminary games as many of the overseas-based players may have to return home.
A number of doubles matches were staged yesterday. In the boys’ 14 and under, Gabriel Taylor, in tandem with Yannick Polanen, whipped Alex Griffith and Kyle Frost 4-1, 4-2.
In the 16 and under Ajani King and Simon Lewis crushed Patrick Brown and Aquille Trotman, 6-1, 6-1.
The boys’ 10 and under match saw Christopher Phillips defeating Runako King 6-2, while in the girls’, Tangia Riley-Codrington outplayed Braden Grogan 6-1.
